Our Standards
Special Touch Home Care was founded in the early 1980’s to support a growing need for high quality in-home care throughout New York City. With an original focus on Brooklyn’s vast Russian-speaking community, Special Touch quickly expanded to ensure that the city’s diversity would never limit anyone’s access to in-home care. We recognize each patient as an individual representative of their own unique background, and treat all with the same level of dignity, respect, and compassion.
Because no two patients are the same, we individually assess each individual to determine their specific needs and how we can best support them. We speak with them, we speak with their families, and we work to find compatible matches within our extensive network of more than five-thousand home health aides.
Our HHAs undergo rigorous screening before being hired, including interviews, reference checks, background checks, drug testing, and competency evaluations. Further, because Special Touch maintains its own in-house training facilities and nursing staff, we can guarantee that our aides are up to date on all relevant skills and knowledge.
Our History
In the early 80’s, home care was neither widespread nor readily available. At the time, our founder was working to provide staffing for various rehabilitation services, such as Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. However, during those efforts, it became apparent that patients were noticing how care could be received in a home setting as an alternative to specialized facilities.
As long-term home care started to become an in-demand service, locating qualified home health aides was challenging. Health Plans and Programs were not immediately ready to meet the needs of a city as big as New York. In response, Special Touch opened its doors in 1984 to help satisfy the growing demand. We began staffing and managing services for a small number of patient’s, but what was once a small business housed in a 1,500-square-foot office in Midwood Brooklyn is now one of the largest providers of home care in all of New York.
Today, Special Touch maintains five offices across New York City and Westchester County, and has provided HHA services to over 100,000 patients. With our more recent role as a recognized Lead CDPAP Fiscal Intermediary/Provider within New York State, our reach has grown to over 20 counties across the entire state. We are hundreds of office staff members and thousands of care providers, all working as a team to offer compassionate, quality home care to the great people of New York.
Message From Our CEO
I would like to thank you personally for spending some time to get to know Special Touch. My name is Evan Ostrovsky, and I would like to speak briefly about why I am here.
Most of us grew up with families that included older relatives: parents, grandparents – sometimes even great-grandparents. When we’re young, we don’t necessarily notice the effects of aging. We understand that some people are older than others, sure, but the tolls of aging aren’t immediately apparent. Eventually, though, we start to notice when our grandparents can’t run with us, when their memory starts to fade, and when medical issues become more serious.
When I was a child, several of my grandparents moved into assisted-living facilities. I remember not seeing them as often. The annual Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma’s was relocated to other homes. There were no more sleepovers, or visits to homes that had grown to feel like they were mine.
Ultimately, I’m here because it’s important to me that there are options to support our elders without experiencing the sense of loss that my family went through.
