5 Fun Activities for Older Adults

Jun 16, 2020

Taking the time to participate in fun activities is essential for everyone. For older adults, in particular, making time for activities can help you live a longer, happier life. According to the National Institute on Aging, older adults who participate in meaningful activities, such as volunteering, and being physically active, say they feel happier and healthier. In addition, creative activities, such as music or dance, can help older adults with memory problems or dementia.

While pursuing your passions is always important, deciding what activities suit the senior(s) in your life can be hard. Here are some of our favorite activities that are perfect for them to try:

1. Gardening

Whether tending houseplants, a home garden, or joining a gardening club, nurturing plants can be incredibly rewarding and mentally stimulating. In addition, gardening is a great way to connect with others to share tips for making plants prosper.
It’s a great way to take time and nurture a living thing. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that plants always brighten up a home.

2. Swimming and Water Aerobics

Swimming engages your whole body while also being low-impact on your joints. This makes it the perfect way for older adults to exercise. In addition, with activities like water aerobics or even synchronized swimming classes, you can exercise as a group while having lots of fun.

Older adults will be amazed at how much they can move and have fun with these activities. Swimming alone is also a fantastic way to relax and tune in with your body physically and mentally.

3. Music and Dancing

Music and dance classes are fun and can help overall brain health. Harvard Medicine reports that studies have shown that music and dance can help with memory and general cognitive function.

Whether being part of a choir, taking dance classes, or playing an instrument in a band, adding music or dance-based activities is excellent for older adults. In addition, it’s always great to have friends who share a passion for music.

4. Volunteering

Volunteering allows older adults to give back to their community and have fun. This can include working with a cause they’re passionate about or even ushering at performing arts events.
Doing this work can help you make more friends and enables you to give back in the process. If you are interested in becoming more involved within your community, volunteering is a fantastic way to accomplish this.

5. Arts Classes

Arts classes like pottery, glasswork, painting, drawing, and sewing can also be enjoyable for seniors. Being creative and expressing yourself can lead to positive health outcomes. According to research on the impact of arts programs, older adults who partake in creative activities have better physical health, have fewer falls, and use less medication.

Signing up for that art class can be a great way to make new friends and improve your overall health. Plus, there’s nothing like letting creativity flow, and your worries float away.
