How to Plan for a Secure and Comfortable Future While Aging Solo

Many Americans understand that financial planning for retirement must begin years in advance, but fewer recognize the importance of preparing for other aspects of aging. While previous generations often depended on support from adult children and family members, today, 13% of adults aged 50 and older live alone and are not married or in long-term relationships, resulting in a growing number of solo agers.

AARP reports that around one-third of Americans aged 50 and older are actively planning for their later years. Fortunately, senior living options have never been more diverse, and with proper planning, older Americans can develop a personalized approach that will allow them to age in comfort and security.

Choose your Space

With more and more people rejecting the idea of aging in a facility – the nursing home industry has experienced a 12% decrease since 2015 – home care has grown in popularity. According to the Commonwealth Fund, “hospital at home” programs provide patients with high-quality care in the comfort of their own, familiar spaces. At-home care has been shown to result in 30% fewer health complications as well as reduced costs in comparison to hospital settings. Aging at home can be an excellent option for those seeking to remain in their communities while maintaining independence.

That being said, aging in an assisted living facility may be a good option for those who do not have the desire or capacity to maintain their own homes as they age and who may appreciate the peace of mind that these facilities offer. According to Forbes Health, there are approximately 30,600 assisted living communities with the capacity to house nearly 1.2 million people in the U.S., and many of them provide scheduled transportation, entertainment, educational speakers, and walking trails or other natural settings on the grounds. These amenities provide a convenient and enriching lifestyle for residents, enhancing their overall quality of life.

Decide what help you will need

As mobility tends to decline with age, it’s crucial for older adults to evaluate the level of support they’ll need – whether for personal care, household tasks, or medical assistance.

Determining the right level of care requires thoughtful consideration. The National Council on Aging suggests focusing on seven key areas of healthy aging: diet, exercise, mindfulness, emotional well-being, social engagement, physical safety, and sun protection. Assessing which areas you may need help with can guide you in creating a personalized aging plan that ensures comfort and independence. For instance, if you require assistance shopping for and preparing nutritious meals, you’ll need a caregiver with the time and capabilities to help complete these tasks on a regular basis, but if you only require intermittent assistance, your aging plan will look quite different.

Select a Caregiver

With the growing variety of home care options, seniors can now customize their care plans to fit their specific needs. Programs like the New York Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program allow older Americans to choose their caregivers, whether they’re family members, friends, or trained professionals.

Opting for a family member or friend as a caregiver can provide emotional support and familiarity, as they often understand your preferences and routines. However, it’s essential to ensure they are prepared for the responsibilities of caregiving, including any necessary medical tasks. Resources for training are often available.

For those who prefer to age in place, it’s crucial that the chosen caregiver – whether a loved one or a professional – is qualified to meet your specific health needs. Many older adults manage chronic conditions. 94% of those over 60 have at least one, and nearly 80% have two or more, according to the National Council on Aging. If you’re dealing with a chronic condition, consider hiring a certified nurse practitioner or healthcare professional to ensure you receive the medical support necessary to maintain your health and well-being as you age.

While aging can feel overwhelming, proactive planning and exploring the wide range of options available today empower solo agers to secure the care they need. With the right support in place, it’s possible to live out your later years with independence, dignity, and happiness.
